Jens Enevoldsen (23/9-1907 - 23/5-1980)

Before GM Bent Larsens appearence on the Danish chess
scene, Jens Enevoldsen was the only chess player in Denmark
with thorough knowledge of "modern" opening theory and the
international chess scene.

Jens Enevoldsen was one of our best chessplayers from
around 1930 until 1972, when he played his last Danish-
championship, finishing second.

Less well-known is it that Jens Enevoldsen was the best blindfold-
player ever in Denmark. He often gave blindfold simultanious
exhibitions at chess clubs against 10-15 opponents (for money).
In 1939 he played 24 opponents in Roskilde with 13 wins and 11 draws !  The performance lastet 11 hours.

One of the reasons that we still remember Jens Enevoldsen
are all the chess books that he wrote, especially : "Verdens bedste skak 1 & 2" and "Fischers vej til VM" and of course
his autobiography " 30 år ved skakbrættet" . They are unique
chess books.

Jens Enevoldsen was obsessed by the thought of his own
position in the history of Danish chess, so much that he
founded a "Niemzowitsch testimonial" which were to finance
the burial place of A.Niemzowitsch, and ultimately his own
next to Niemzowitsch, so that the two most important men
in the history of Danish chess ( according to Enevoldsen )
are buried side by side.

Today The Danish chess federation ( Dansk skak union )
sponsors the burial place at Bispebjerg kirkegård, preserving
an important monument in The history of Danish chess.
